Gillett & Co Manchester. Circa 1800. A grand moon-phase longcase clock with flame mahogany and inlaid case.

£750.00

A very grand flame mahogany and inlaid longcase clock by Gillett & Co, Manchester, with moon-phases, dating to around 1800.

Complete and fully working/ serviced.

This type of very grand longcase clock became popular in the thriving city of Manchester during the latter part of the 18th century. Very much a statement piece with top quality flame mahogany, ‘Chippendale sticks’ (pillars), moon-phases and gilt fretwork above the arch.

Charles Edward Gillett was born in1743 and became one of the top clockmakers in Manchester, he died in 1806. From 1777-93 he worked in partnership with John Healey, then from 1794-1802 in partnership with his son. Clocks from this period are marked as either “Gillett& Son” or “Gillett & Co” as this one. Most of his clocks tend to be of the very grand type so he was obviously selling clocks to wealthy people.

The dial is typical of those being produced during the 1790s, hand-painted and still retaining Roman numeral for hours and large Arabic minutes outside (these tend to disappear quickly after1800). The corners are tastefully decorated with gilt floral themes, in some ways imitating the earlier 1780s style, but I think overall taking other features into account this is nearer to 1800.

The hands are typical steel ‘serpentine’ form and appear original.

The case must have been a very expensive order at the time it was commissioned, only the best casemakers would have access to the materials and have the skills to make something like this.

The movement is typical for the period, well-made and of 2-train, 4-pillar format, striking the hours on a bell.

The clock is fully working and generally in good condition. The case has various age-related defects but still presents very well. It has a deep and shiny polish, probably French polish/shellac, which is mostly intact, just a few small areas where it has worn. The overall colour is excellent, nice to see them like this, not faded etc.

The clock is complete with brass-faced pendulum, weights, winder and trunk door key (working lock).

Overall height is 94 inches.
