James Jordan, Chatham. Circa 1710. 5-pillar movement with inside countwheel. Walnut case.
James Jordan, Chatham. A good early 8-day longcase clock in original walnut case. 5-pillar, 8-day movement, inside countwheel strike. Impressive hood with ‘3-tier’ silk backed fretwork.
A super clock! Not easy at all now to find good original clocks from this period. This is typical of the fashion in and around London between 1700 and 1720.
James Jordan is listed as working between approx. 1705 and 1740. Very little is known about his working life but he made some very fine clocks.
The clock is very good for the age. The walnut case has various signs of wood movement and minor dings here and there but has an excellent deep colour and polish. The array of 3 separate fretwork panels to the hood is a beautiful feature and very rare I think, I don’t remember seeing this before.
The movement has been properly cleaned and serviced and works as it should. The dial shows some age/ patina but is in good condition with bright silvering. The spandrels retain a good gilded finish, I don’t know if this is original but it is certainly old.
The clock is complete with brass-cased weights, brass-faced pendulum, winder and trunk door key (working lock).
Overall height is 88 inches.
