Martin Clayton, Manchester. Circa 1815. A large and impressive Manchester longcase clock with moon-phases and top quality flame mahogany case.
A magnificent antique longcase clock by Martin Clayton dating to around 1815, with top quality flame mahogany case, moon phases, 8-day striking movement.
These big Manchester clocks were designed to impress, the very substantial case has excellent flame veneers and typical Manchester 'prow' to the hood. The painted dial (by Kempson & Felton) with corners depicting the four seasons, a common theme of the time. The arch has a painted moon-phase which slowly rotates from the movement to show the current age of the moon.
Martin Clayton is listed as working in Manchester from around 1790 until his death in 1825. This clock is easy to date accurately because the dial-makers, Kempson & Felton, only worked in partnership between 1813 and 1815.
The clock is in very good condition and fully working including moon and date functions. The movement is in good condition/ serviced. The dial is very good with bright paintwork, I think it has had some restoration work fairly recently but looks largely original, the trick is often to remove the old discoloured varnish which can mask the true colours. The case is very good for its age, some minor defects as you would expect but good colour and polish.
Complete with brass-faced pendulum, weights, winder and trunk door key (working lock).
Overall height is just under 97 inches.
